Managing Diabetes

We are excited to announce that Jerusalem Makonnen, FNP-BC and Mahedere Solomon, FNP-C will be joining us again for our upcoming discussion titled “Managing Diabetes.” While our last talk focused on understanding the basics of diabetes, this discussion will include a closer look at practical tips you and your loved ones can use to manage diabetes sustainably! Understanding Diabetes

With diabetes being extremely common, affecting around 422 million people across the globe, it is important for all of us to gain an understanding of this chronic disease. Join us in a discussion led by Jerusalem Makonnen, RN FNP-BC, and Mahedere Solomon, FNP-C to learn more about how you or your loved ones can prevent and treat diabetes.
Jerusalem Makonnen is a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner who has been working in primary care for the past 25 years. After receiving her Masters of Science in Nursing at Yale University, Jerusalem has gone on to serve as an Associate Clinical Professor at UCSF and is currently caring for patients at One Medical in Oakland, CA.
Our other speaker, Mahedere “Mimi” Solomon, FNP-C, is a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner with over 20 years of experience in healthcare. Since graduating with a Master’s of Science in Nursing in 2004, she has dedicated her career to community service and promoting health equity in vulnerable communities. Mimi now lives in Richmond, CA, and enjoys spending her free time with her two young sons.

Preparing For A Healthy Pregnancy

Health before pregnancy can determine not only the chances of conception but also the health of you and your baby for years to come! Joining us this month is Dr. Martha Tesfalul, a board-certified gynecologist who specializes in high-risk pregnancies in a discussion on steps that can be taken before pregnancy to improve birthing outcomes. Dr. Tesfalul obtained her BA in Sociology from Harvard University and MD with a concentration in Public Health and Service from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and completed her residency and both a clinical and research fellowship at UCSF. Moderating this talk is Asmara Gebre, certified nursing midwife and assistant clinical professor at UCSF.

Adopting a Trauma-Informed Approach to Self-Care

COVID-19 Vaccine Discussion Forum
Welcome to part one of our COVID-19 Vaccine series where during the coming month, we will release weekly information on the vaccine and what it means for the Habesha community. We partnered with the Ethio-Philly Mental Health Council to host a discussion with experts in the field on the COVID-19 vaccine. We would like to thank our presenters Amha Tadesse, MPH, Kassahun Selassie, PhD and Bekele Abebe for sharing their expertise as well as Eyob Feyssa, MD for moderating!
The key takeaways from the discussion were the importance of vaccines in eliminating disease, the development and regulatory approval process of the COVID-19 vaccine, and the current research on how safe and effective the COVID-19 vaccine is.

Tips To Keep Your Brain Healthy
